Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

The first thing I've learned about HRT is that every woman will have a different way of weighing the pros and cons. The challenge is to get as comprehensive a picture of those positives and negatives as possible.

The second thing I've learned is that HRT is big business and very marketing driven. That means that people making and selling HRT products may have a primary motivation to create a need so that they make money. This could come at your health and pocket book expense.

Another point that needs to be realized is that science changes as time goes on. What we know about medicine today is vastly different than 50 years ago and will be somewhat dated in another 50 years. So what is claimed as safe and revolutionary today may turn out to be a giant failed experiment in the future. Or visa versa.

On a practical note HRT( or HT) is a hormone treatment prescribed by a Doctor. The purpose of HRT is to replace naturally declining estrogen and progesterone levels due to menopause. HRT comes in one of three different combinations; estrogen taken alone, progesterone taken alone or a combination of estrogen plus progesterone.

HRT may be prescribed as a pill, patch, cream or gel, an implant, an injection or a vaginal ring.

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy is a natural version of HRT. BHT is made from different plant hormones that are like those in a woman's body. Each BHT prescription is hand-mixed and the dose can vary from patient to patient. Check the bookstore in this section for a more detailed resource on natural hormone replacement.

The responsibility for how you approach and manage your menopause is squarely on your shoulders. You will need to ask lots of questions and use your instinct to find the best menopause route for yourself.
