Cessation of Menopause

How do I know when menopause is over? Is there a test I can take?

Answer:

Menopause is not a brief process. It can take anywhere between 6 to 13 years before a woman is finally through the change, and the length of time will differ for each woman. Here are a few helpful hints to determine if you have reached the end of menopause:

  • You’ve stopped menstruating for a year or longer.
  •  You no longer experience menopausal symptoms. This means that your hormone levels have balanced out.
  • You could test for the number of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormones) that are still present in your body. This can be determined through a blood test. If the levels of FSH are above 40 IU/L (international units per liter), then your menopause is likely over. FSH are the hormones that stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs.
  • Visit your doctor. The doctor can do a medical exam to figure out if you have finished menopause. She or he can also identify any physical changes that have occurred during the process.

An important thing to remember is that you can still become pregnant until you are completely postmenopausal. Your body may still be fertile until you’re twelve months free of menstruation.

I’m pretty sure that you’ll be able to consciously tell when your menopause is over. You will no longer be getting periods for over a year and all of those irritable menopausal symptoms will have vanished!
