Battling Memory Loss

I started experiencing symptoms of menopause at age 37, I’ve just turned 44 and feel I have really started to lose my memory. I’ve tried using Gingko Biloba, but feel that this has caused my headaches. Do you know of any products that may help with my memory loss that don’t contain Gingko Biloba?

Answer:

Gingko Biloba has been the herbal remedy most associated with improving memory loss. Whether or not this herb or others actual work is still unknown. Please remember to always consult with a doctor before trying any new medicinal remedy, whether natural or artificial.

Besides Gingko Biloba, there have been a few other natural remedies that have been thought to enhance the memory. The following essential oils may help with memory loss:

  •  Lemon - enhances mental clarity.
  • Basil - fuels brain functions and promotes a clear mind.
  • Rosemary - helps with concentration, mental clarity, creativity, and memory.

There are also a couple of other herbs that are similar to Gingko Biloba that may help memory:

  • Rosmarinus Officinalis - is an herb of Mediterranean origin. It has an energizing effect on the circulatory system and helps improve blood flow to the brain, boosting mental activities including memory. In folklore, it is a “symbol of remembrance.”
  • Salvia Officinalis - an herb traditionally known to help restore memory and promote a longer life. It has anti-oxidant properties that work to reduce the signs of aging.

There are other ways to battle memory loss by enhancing a healthy brain. These techniques are completely natural and anyone can do them:

  • Meditation - through meditation you are encouraging your body to relax. Meditation clears the mind of clutter and eliminates all thoughts to help make it easier to remember important things. This will also help improve your concentration, which in turn can enhance your memory.
  • Mental exercises - this can include reading or any kind of mental puzzle such as a crossword. Mental activity helps to keep your brain and mind fit while promoting a stronger memory.
  • Lower your blood pressure - it has been shown in studies that high blood pressure can increase memory loss.
  • Eat a healthy diet - nutrition is important to the functioning of a healthy mind.
  • Water - make sure you are getting your daily recommended intake of water because it can help enhance memory. If you are not drinking enough water your body may become dehydrated which leads to confusion.
  • Sleep - getting a good nights’ rest is good for the body and mind. During sleep, the brain uses this time to sort through experiences and store memories.
  • Exercise - has a strong a mind-body connection. Physical exercise also helps to promote mental alertness.

Because herbal remedies have not been proven to be effective in helping to improve memory, stick to the last list of suggestions to help improve and maintain your memory and consult your doctor about any supplements you would like to try.
