Is there such a thing as delayed menopause? I am 70 years old and for about eight years have been experiencing sweats during the day and night. When I stopped my period in my 50’s, I did not experience this. My doctor has suggested estrogen, but I don’t want to use this. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer:
I just did a search on your situation and have not heard of the symptoms of menopause being delayed past the actual cessation of menstruation. There is such a thing as late menopause, but this means that the whole process of menopause is delayed, and not just the symptoms. Since you’ve already stopped menstruating, this means you have already gone though menopause. The symptoms you are now experiencing probably have another source of origin. I would go and see your doctor. You can explain your symptoms and your doctor will be able to provide information about any possible causes or treatment.
Late menopause is when menstruation continues past the age of 54. It is found to have a genetic component and to be linked with diabetes. Women who continue to menstruate are also believed to have an increased risk in developing uterus or breast cancer. This is because women who go through menopause later in life are exposed to estrogen hormones longer than others.
Vaginal bleeding past your mid-fifties could be a sign of more serious problems and needs to be checked out by a doctor immediately. It is also important to go and see your doctor as soon as possible if you have already gone through menopause, but start to experience vaginal bleeding again.
