Mood and Behavior Changes

I am currently in menopause and suffer from anxiety, depression and panic attacks.  I am currently on medications (Cymbalta, Trazadone, Clonazepam) and HZTC for high blood pressure.  I am constantly fatigued even when I awake in the morning.  I also am irritable, cry almost every day and totally stressed out as I am under a lot of pressure at work.

I am currently not on any hormone therapy.

Is there any way to determine if the above symptoms are from the anxiety & depression or menopause? What could be done about it?  I am going to make an appointment with my internist to discuss the possibility of increasing the dosage of my meds.

Your answer would be greatly appreciated.

Anxiety and depression are both symptoms of menopause. With fluctuating hormones it’s easy to understand how you would not feel like yourself. Please visit your doctor as soon as possible to discuss what measures can be taken to tackle your depression. The feelings you are experiencing may also be a side effect of your high blood pressure medication. Eating healthy and exercising regularly also work wonders for lifting the mood.

Hi Carolyn,

The exhaustion you're feeling is quite normal. This is because your body is going through massive changes - due to your hormone levels. This is likely causing you poor sleep, night sweats, and hot flashes - which all contribute to fatigue.

I know it's difficult to hear the phrase "Hang in there", but this is a normal side effect of menopause, and it will take your body time to adjust. Try a few of these tricks to help get your energy back:

Eat a well-balanced, healthy diet of lean meats, fruits, veggies and stay away from trans and saturated fats and overly processed foods. This will go a long way in fueling your body.

Stay hydrated - much fatigue is acutally caused by dehydration.

Eat Breakfast - Always start your day with healthy fuel - this will actually help stop weight gain as well.

Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day - I know it sounds strange to hear - eat more! But small healthy meals keep the body fueled and energized.

See your doctor to see if he or she can make some suggestions on how to help your transition into menopause.

Good luck, and please check back in with us.
