Menopause causes a fluctuation in hormones and that can sometimes alter the levels of testosterone and DHEA in the body. This can cause a number of unwanted side effects, including facial and body hair and acne. Usually when women go through menopause their testosterone and DHEA levels drop significantly, so I’m unclear as to why your levels would be elevated.

Women begin producing more testosterone around puberty. This male hormone is important for maintaining muscles and bone and also for sex drive. Some women who have had testosterone replacement during menopause and post menopause have reported that their quality of life improved. Unfortunately, there aren’t many forms of testosterone replacement therapy available yet.

While higher levels of testosterone may make you feel better during or postmenopause there are risks. Elevated testosterone levels can be a sign of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. I would urge you to see your doctor as soon as possible to be tested.

High levels of testosterone can affect also cholesterol, which is normally kept in check by estrogen. It can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Testosterone can also affect the mood, if your body is producing too much of it. You may experience feelings of anger and aggression and may become more impatient. You may also experience fluid retention and weight gain.

Women with elevated testosterone levels should make some lifestyle changes. Eat dark green vegetables and plenty of whole grains. It is also important to eat plenty of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Cut back on sugar, processed foods, caffeine and alcohol. Eliminate stress by getting plenty of rest and exercising regularly. Massage therapy may also be helpful. Please make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to discuss your concerns and find out what is causing your testosterone and DHEA levels to rise.
