Menopause Study Participants Sought

MINNESOTA, Nov. 2004 -- The University of Minnesota is looking for 180 women who are experiencing menopause for a study of a Japanese herbal remedy for hot flashes.

This is the first Japanese herbal medicine for women approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical study, says lead researcher Greg Plotnikoff. The study will determine if the formula reduces the severity and frequency of hot flashes.

The formula, which will be in pill form, contains cinnamon, peony, two other Japanese herbs and one Japanese mushroom. It has been available by prescription in Japan since 1976. Since 1994, more than 400 million doses have been prescribed.

Participants should be 45 to 55 years old and whose last period occurred one to four years ago. During the 13-week study, participants will be required to come in every four weeks for checkups. They will receive an honorarium, and parking costs will be covered.
